The Bayelsa State Government has disbursed the sum of One million British pounds and 200 million naira to the State Scholarship Board for onward transmission to scholars on state government scholarship studying in the United Kingdom.
Disclosing this to Government House correspondents in Yenagoa, the State Governor, Hon. Seriake Dickson said, the monies were in fulfillment of his pledge to the students, during his interactive session with them in London recently.
The Governor, who reaffirmed Government’s commitment to continue to fulfill its scholarship obligations to Bayelsans in different parts of the world, noted with satisfaction, the exemplary conduct of the UK based students, stressing that, they were a pride to the State.
Hon Dickson explained that, despite the dwindling finances of the government, it will continue to make regular remittances to the students, while also urging them to take their studies seriously to justify government’s huge financial investment.
According to him, his administration will continue to make massive investments in the education, because of the manpower requirements of the State and the pivotal role it plays in the overall development of the human being.
Governor Dickson also used the opportunity to restate government’s preparedness to fulfill an earlier promise to pay the bursaries for Bayelsa students in higher institutions of learning in the country, stating that, the payments will commence at the end of June, 2014.
In his remarks, the Chairman of the State Scholarships Board, Evangelist Foster Ogola, commended Governor Dickson for fulfilling his promise to the students, noting that, it will go a long way in boosting the morale of the students.
He assured the Governor that, the 200 million naira and the One million pounds, will be judiciously disbursed to the students, who are spread across various universities in the United Kingdom.
