Speaking to journalists in Maiduguri, the North-East information officer of the agency, AbdulKadir Ibrahim, said the internally displaced persons were, at present, seeking refuge in Biu and Maiduguri, both in Borno State and Goniri in Gujba Local Government Area of Yobe State.
He said the number of displaced persons in Biu as of Monday stood at 10,204, 3,000 in Maiduguri and 2,000 in Goniri.
A source from the town also said: “Thousands of our people are running in all directions and over 1000 people fled in the direction of Uba to seek solace.”
According to Ibrahim, the displaced people were not only from Damboa town, but also from surrounding locations of Kimba, Madaragrau, Mandafuma, Chikwar Kir, Bomburatai and Sabon Kwatta.
Ibrahim, who disclosed that the agency had concluded plan to take relief materials to the displaced persons, said “NEMA is going for camp management in the aforementioned locations, to cater for the needs of the displaced people.”
He said initial assessment indicated that those displaced required basic household items, including plates, spoons, towels, cups, clothing, bedding, food items, blankets, mosquito nets and sanitary pads.
The NEMA spokesman said the new figure had added up the initial figure of 149,903 persons that the agency had had to attend to from January 2014 till date.
