OTTAWA, Canada, November 17, 2013/African Press Organization (APO)/ — Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird today issued the following statement:
“Canada condemns the recent violence in Tripoli, in particular the attacks against civilians, and calls for an immediate cessation of hostilities. Canada extends its condolences and sympathies to the families of the innocent victims of the fighting.
“Events over the past two days have clearly demonstrated that the existence of armed militias operating outside of state control continues to drive instability in Libya. Efforts to advance disarmament, demobilization and reintegration of militia fighters must be accelerated.
“The sacrifices made during the Revolution must not be squandered. Completing the democratic transition will require all Libyans to stand together in support of a stable, secure and prosperous country.”
