The Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria (CBCN) has called on President Bola Tinubu to release Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), in the best interest of the South-East region.
The appeal follows the denial of Kanu’s bail application by a Federal High Court in Abuja, sparking concerns about the region’s economic prosperity and security.
Most Reverend Lucius Ugorji, President of the CBCN, made the appeal during the episcopal ordination of the Auxiliary Bishop of Orlu Diocese in Imo State. Ugorji emphasized that Kanu’s release would pave the way for economic growth and security in the South-East.

Ugorji highlighted that Kanu’s prolonged detention has been a major factor contributing to insecurity in the region.
He noted that the weekly sit-at-home orders have paralyzed the economy, resulting in significant financial losses for businesses in the area.
Justice Binta Nyako of the Federal High Court in Abuja denied Kanu bail on Tuesday but ordered an accelerated hearing of the case.
Kanu has been in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS) since his arrest in June 2021.
