The Chairman Code of Conduct Tribunal, Justice Danladi Yakub Umar has advocated for a review of the country’s sentences laws, as some of their provisions are obsolete.
Justice Umar made the charge in Lagos at the Leadership Cooperation Workshop of Heads of Investigation and Prosecution of Anti-Corruption Agencies, organized by United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC).
He said: “There is need to review our sentences law, as some of the provisions in Penal and Criminal Codes are obsolete”.
The Chairman further contributed that synergy among stakeholders will help a great deal in spurring fight against corruption in the country.
The Chairman also stated the need to have Anti-corruption Community among the various support groups from the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), European Union, D4 and other supporting international agencies assisting Nigerian Government to fight corruption.
The Workshop witnessed the signing of MoU by the entire Chief Executives of anti-corruption Agencies in the country, to ensure cooperation and exchange of information, thereby removing inhibitions that decelerate the crusade, which were occasioned by unnecessary rivalry among the agencies.
The Workshop at its conclusion produced a Communiqué which centered on new strategies on war against corruption anchored on collaboration and engagement between all stakeholders under the coordination of European Union to ensure global best practices as the case elsewhere.
Those in attendance were the Chairman, Code of Conduct Bureau; Mr. Sam Saba; Chairman, Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Ibrahim Lamorde; Chairman, Independent Corrupt Practices and other related offences Commission, Mr. Ekpo Nta and the Executive Secretary of Nigeria Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative, Mrs. Zainab Shamsuna Ahmad.
