Chelsea’s Brazilian ace Willian has had an impressive 2013, but wants to go one better this year. The 25-year-old had an uncertain start to 2013, playing for three different clubs between March and August.
.
The attacking midfielder was signed for big spending Russian outfit Anzhi Makhachkala from Ukrainian side Shakhtar Donetsk. He signed a lucrative four- year deal with the Russians, but a sudden change of heart by the club’s ownership led to them offloading all their high-earners in a change of tact that brought to the Brazilian to Stamford Bridge after foiled talks with Tottenham Hotspur.
.
He, along with Samuel Eto’o, left Russia for West London in a €35 million switch to Chelsea and hasn’t looked back since. The Blues had long been admirers of the tricky Brazilian, but Shakhtar had always rejected their enquiries for his services.
.
“I always dreamed about signing for a big club like Chelsea and playing for Brazil, and now it’s all coming true,” he told FIFA.com.
.
“My life changed a lot this year. But it was a great year too, and I’m really happy where I am right now.”
.
Willian is playing fairly regularly for Jose Mourinho’s side this term and has ousted Juan Mata from contention, with the Portuguese boss seemingly preferring the Brazilian over fan-favourite Mata due to his work-rate without possession.
.
“My first impressions of Mourinho were really positive.” He told FIFA.com.
.
“He is one of the best coaches in the world and he said that he was delighted that I had come to Chelsea, and that he liked the way I play.”
.
The attacking midfielder’s season would be topped off by appearing at the World Cup in his home nation.
.
Playing alongside Brazil boss Felipe Luiz Scolari’s favourite David Luiz, Oscar and Ramires has helped Willian come in to contention for the hotly-contested places in the Brazilian World Cup squad.
.
“It has worked out perfectly. Everything has slotted into place,” he said.
.
For now, Willian’s focus is on success with Chelsea and he hopes that it will earn him the chance to play at a World Cup in his home nation.
.
“I want to win trophies with Chelsea, and win the World Cup too,” he said. “That would be a perfect year, the best of my life.”
