Israel is the latest of countries to offer support to Nigeria in its fight against terrorism which has eaten deep into the country and has left more than 200 girls in the stronghold of terror group, Boko Haram.
The Asian country informed President Goodluck Jonathan that it would be sending a team of Israeli counter-terrorism experts, to assist in the ongoing search and rescue operations of the girls abducted by Boko Haram insurgents in Government Secondary School, Chibok, Borno State.
Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu made the offer over the phone on Sunday.
A statement issued by the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Dr Reuben Abati, in Abuja, said Netanyahu called to convey his country’s sympathy and solidarity with Nigeria.
Jonathan said after speaking with the Israeli PM that he was optimistic that with the entire international community deploying its considerable military and intelligence-gathering skills and assets in support of Nigeria’s efforts to find and rescue the abducted Chibok girls, success would soon be achieved.
He welcomed the offer by Netanyahu and briefed him on actions already being taken by Nigeria’s Armed Forces and security agencies to locate and rescue the girls, saying that Nigeria would be pleased to have Israel’s globally-acknowledged anti-terrorism expertise deployed to support its ongoing operations.
Israel’s team of experts, according to the PM, would soon arrive in Nigeria and would work in collaboration with teams from the United States and Britain, and their Nigerian counterparts, to intensify the search for the girls.
