Brig.-Gen. Sule Kazaure, Director-General, National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), in Abuja on Wednesday, urged all corps members to accept their postings for the mandatory national primary assignment in good faith.
Kazaure gave the advice when he visited the NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp, Kubwa, FCT, Abuja to inspect facilities and monitor the orientation course of the Batch ‘B’ Stream II set of corps members.
The director-general, who was represented by Mr Daniel Dauda, the NYSC Director of Finance and Accounts, assured corps members that the scheme would only post them to organisations where their services were needed.
He urged them to and move to their areas of primary assignment once the orientation course was over with positive attitude.
“Wherever you are posted to for your primary place of assignment, ensure that you conduct yourself with dignity and maturity because you are a graduate and therefore a senior staff of the organisation.”
“Be very humble and confident wherever you are posted to a rural community, organisation or agency within the city centre, the FCT is a very peaceful place.”
“The State Coordinators will sign your letters o posting and while doing so, they will check and ensure that the postings have been done properly and corps members posted accordingly.”
“Be a good ambassador of your institutions and parents.”
‘’I assure you that NYSC staff will monitor your movements and activities to ensure you comply with the rules and regulations guiding the scheme,” Kazaure said.
He further advised the corps members to take all activities of the scheme seriously, including the Community Development Service (CDS).
“We have the Local Government Awards, State Government Awards and the Presidential Honours, Award for those who will distinguish themselves and exhibit good behaviour during the service year.”
The director-general, however, warned corps members that will refuse to do the right that, particularly absence from duties, that they risked repeating or extension of the service year.
Kazaure also called on the NYSC members not to reside or live in isolation but ensure that their friends knew where they resided, for security purpose during their service year.
Earlier, Mr Salawu Abdulrazak, the NYSC FCT Coordinator, told the director-general that corps members had been active in training and lectures.
Abdulrazak said the camp did not record any insubordination from corps members or camp officials and no security challenges, adding that staff and security personnel carried out their duties diligently.
He, however, urged Kazaure to explore avenues to provide more training materials for use by corps members during their skills acquisition training.
“I appeal to the director-general to please appeal to organisations and companies to assist us with materials for the training of these corps members.”
“For instance, a trainer may be training up to 300 corps members in a particular ski, using only one training material which makes it difficult for the corps members to grasp what they are being taught,” Abdulrazak said.
He lauded the founders of the scheme, stating that the scheme had added to national development, especially in the case youth empowerment.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Batch ‘B’ Stream II orientation course will end on Feb.13 and corps members posted to their places of primary assignment after the training.
NYSC was created by Decree No.24 of May 22, 1973 to enable the scheme properly encourage and develop common ties among the youth of Nigeria among others.
