The Chairman of Nnewi North Local Government Area of Anambra State, Honourable Echezona Anazado has called for strategic collaboration with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC to strengthen sensitization campaigns against cybercrimes in his local government area.
Also, the Convener, Anambra Civic Pulse, Comrade Henry Ogwudu has also pressed for collaboration in carrying out enlightenment campaigns against corrupt practices in the Southeast, especially at the grassroots.
They made these appeals on Thursday, August 21, 2025 while on a courtesy visit to the Enugu Acting Zonal Director of the EFCC, Assistant Commander of the EFCC, ACE1 Aisha Abubakar in her office.
According to Anazado who lauded the Commission for its doggedness in the fight against corruption, collaboration was necessary to raise awareness against incessant increase in cybercrime activities in the society. He expressed worries that if internet fraud was not curbed, more youths will languish in jail. He , therefore, sought for support in sensitizing the people of Nnewi North and deter the youths from the fraud.
“We have been fighting crimes before we came into government even with little support from the government. Now that I am in government, I don’t have any excuse not to fully engage in this fight. The fight against corruption especially cybercrimes is very important to me. So, I am here to appeal to EFCC, as I am extending my hand of collaboration to please, help us sanitize Nnewi North. Let us explore the area of sensitization together and try to deter these youths from this crime because, from yahoo-yahoo, they will start kidnapping and then, ritual killings. I am here to partner with you in that regard”, he said.
Ogwudu, in his submissions, noted that most parents are ignorant of what constitutes a crime and as such, enlightenment campaigns should be carried out to equip people at the grassroots with the anti-corruption message.
“It is a painful experience when a parent sees his or her child taken to prison. Most of them don’t ask their children, ‘what do you do to get this money’? He pointed out that “before now, cybercrimes were done in the city but now, they are thriving in the villages. As long as you have Wi-Fi, you are good to go. So, we want to go to villages, schools, market places, everywhere and sensitize the people on the ills of corruption”.
Responding, Abubakar appreciated the visit and explained that the fight against corruption required every hand to be on deck. She noted that as future leaders of tomorrow, youths have to be sensitized and equipped with the right knowledge about leadership before handing over the mantle of leadership to them.
“We are excited and happy to have you here because I have seen how passionate you are about the society. It is different and unique when people sit down and come up with such ideas that aim at making our environment a safe place. My doors are always open to you, if you want us to play a part in anything and assist you in any way, we will because, our EFCC Establishment Act empowers us to go out there and carryout rigorous sensitization campaigns on the ills of corruption”, she said. She also disclosed that the EFCC Radio and the weekly EFCC Connect are robust public enlightenment platforms the Commission is using to reach the public.
