The High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) sitting at Maitama, Abuja, has modified the bail conditions granted to the immediate past Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele.
In November, the court had granted Emefiele bail in the sum of N300 million with two sureties in like sum.
Each surety was required to possess landed property worth N300 million within the court’s jurisdiction, with a Certificate of Occupancy (C of O) to be deposited with the court registrar for verification.

Emefiele was also ordered to deposit his travel documents with the court and remain in Abuja during the trial.
During Thursday’s proceedings, Emefiele’s counsel, Matthew Burkaa, SAN, informed the court that the defendant had filed a motion seeking a variation of the bail condition to allow him to travel within the country.
Burkaa urged the court to grant the request.
The prosecuting counsel, Rotimi Oyedepo, SAN, did not object to the application but requested that Emefiele remain within Nigeria for the duration of his trial.
He also asked for an undertaking from the defence team to ensure Emefiele’s compliance.
In response, Justice Hamza Muazu granted the request, ordering Emefiele to stay within Nigeria for the period of his trial.
Meanwhile, Oyedepo informed the court that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) had filed an amended charge against Emefiele on Wednesday. He requested that Emefiele be allowed to take his plea for the new charge.
However, Burkaa stated that the defence needed time to study the new charge, which they received on Wednesday. As a result, the court adjourned the sitting until January 19 for the plea to be taken.
Emefiele was arraigned before the court on November 17, 2023, on a six-count charge related to conferring an advantage on a female staff member of CBN, contrary to the Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Act, 2000. He pleaded not guilty to the charges.
