Datti Baba-Ahmed, the 2023 Labour Party presidential running mate to Peter Obi, has explained his decision to leave Obi’s political camp, alleging that the former Anambra State governor lacked a clear plan for governing Nigeria.
Baba-Ahmed, who is now associated with the African Democratic Congress (ADC), made the disclosure while speaking on Channels Television.
He said his decision was based on differences over the direction of the political movement and what he described as the absence of a detailed programme for addressing Nigeria’s challenges.
According to him, he expected the political platform built around Obi to develop a clear and comprehensive plan that would provide solutions to the country’s economic and security problems.
Baba-Ahmed said he eventually decided to pursue a different political path after becoming dissatisfied with the direction of the movement.
He maintained that political participation should be driven by clearly defined policies and programmes rather than personalities or the popularity of individual politicians.
The former presidential candidate also said he remains committed to contributing to efforts aimed at producing a different political direction for Nigeria ahead of the 2027 general elections.
His comments come amid significant political realignments among opposition figures ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
Obi is currently the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), with former Kano State Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso as his running mate, while the ADC has emerged as another major opposition platform.
Baba-Ahmed’s departure from Obi’s camp marks a further development in the political realignment among opposition figures who were previously associated with the Labour Party ticket that contested the 2023 presidential election.
The former Labour Party vice-presidential candidate said his decision should be understood as a political choice based on his assessment of the direction he wanted to pursue, rather than a personal disagreement.
As the 2027 election approaches, the movement of prominent politicians between opposition platforms is expected to continue shaping the alliances, campaigns and competing political strategies emerging ahead of the poll.
