The Delta State Government has boosted its Micro Credit Programme (DMCP), with no fewer than 1,211 persons in Ughelli South Local Government Area of the State benefiting from its free-interest loan. The beneficiaries, comprising 121 cluster groups made up of 885 women and 326 males, were presented with certificates for onward disbursement of the loan at their designated microfinance bank in the area.
The disbursement exercise, which showcased ingenious display of creativity from some of the beneficiaries, saw a handful of the groups, particularly those returning for the second time, receiving economic lifeline up to the tune of N2million.Presenting the certificates, the State Commissioner for Poverty Alleviation, Dr. Antonia Ashiedu appealed to community and religious leaders in the State to encourage youths in their communities and religious organisations to take advantage of the State Government’s free-interest loans to improve their economic lives. She noted that the appeal became imperative in order to reduce the increasing rates of unemployment in the State and transform the youths economically, making them not only entrepreneurs, but employers of labour.
She advised every Deltan to try and get something meaningful doing as the State Government under the leadership of His Excellency, Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan is committed to the overall development of the State through the human capital development component of the his three point agenda.
While saying that the DMCP has, to a large extent united Deltans, particularly the direct beneficiaries of the programme, Dr. Ashiedu expressed satisfaction with what she called the economic ingenuity and entrepreneurial prowess of the women in Delta Central areas.
The Commissioner representing Ughelli South at the board of Delta State Oil Producing Community (DESOPADEC), Mr. Festus Utuama lauded the State Government for sustaining the programme, which he noted has wiped out poverty from the lives of many Deltans.
Some of the beneficiaries commended the State Governor, Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan and the State Commissioner for Poverty Alleviation for sustaining the programme which they described as hope for the otherwise hopeless persons in the society.
