The Delta State House of Assembly Committee on Legislative Compliance has issued a warning to the management of Delta State Polytechnic, Ogwahsi-Uku, instructing them not to disregard its resolution.
The institution has been directed to implement, within 24 hours, the resolution reached in January 2023 by the 7th Delta Assembly.
During a crucial meeting with the polytechnic’s management team, the committee’s chairman and Deputy Speaker, Arthur Akpowowo, cautioned that any further disregard of the committee’s resolution by the institution’s authorities would result in severe sanctions.
The Legislative Compliance Committee, comprising members such as Majority Leader Emeka Nwaobi, Minority Leader Edafe Emakpor, and Deputy Majority Leader Festus Okoh, expressed disapproval of what they described as the management’s blatant disrespect for the assembly.
While threatening to invoke relevant sections of the legislative rules, the committee urged the management team, led by its rector, Prof. Emmanuel Achuenu, to submit a letter within 24 hours confirming compliance with its directive.
“In the letter that you sent to us, it was obvious that you were not ready to implement our resolution. Our duty as a committee is to ensure that we do justice to every case that is reported to the State Assembly. In your letter, it is evident that you do not have respect for this House. There was certainly no reason for you to have replied to us in the manner and tone contained in your letter.
“We have sent several letters to you. This is our last meeting with you on this matter. You have between now and tomorrow to implement our resolution,” Akpowowo stated.
In response, the rector of the polytechnic, Prof. Achuenu, who apologized on behalf of the management, pledged to comply with the resolution as directed.
The resolution, initially communicated to the school management, involved the immediate reinstatement and reappraisal of the sanction placed on Mrs. Grace Adah of the polytechnic’s Department of Academic Planning.
Adah, allegedly demoted to the post of Principal Assistant Registrar following an issue with the management, petitioned the Delta State House of Assembly.
fter investigation, the assembly directed that she be re-designated as Lecturer 1.
