Former Lagos lawmaker Dipo Olorunrinu has lauded President Bola Tinubu for improving the electoral prospects of the All Progressives Congress (APC) through the recent Supreme Court judgment on local government autonomy.
Olorunrinu, who represented Amuwo-Odofin Constituency I in the Lagos State House of Assembly from 2015 to 2019, made these remarks in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday.
NAN recalls that on Thursday, the Supreme Court issued a landmark ruling directing the Federal Government to commence direct payments of local government funds into their exclusive accounts, bypassing the State Joint Local Government Account.

This ruling followed a suit brought by the Attorney-General of the Federation, highlighting local governments’ struggles to access their funds.
“Local government autonomy is one of the ways that the APC has promoted itself,” Olorunrinu stated. “President Tinubu is a very intelligent person, who knows the impact of these things.
My advice is that people should buy into his policies and reforms, and give him some time to perform and allow these things to work.
The removal of fuel subsidies was a wise thing to do.”
Olorunrinu emphasized that local government autonomy would enable the masses to better reap the dividends of democracy from the Federal Government.
He argued that effective governance at the federal level depends on properly functioning local governments.
“Even with the present system, it takes a very active council chairman to understand that whatever resources you are given from the federal or state government is never enough; you need to partner with the residents of your locality,” Olorunrinu added.
