Doyin Okupe, former Director General of the Peter Obi-Datti Presidential Campaign Organization, has stepped down from the Labour Party (LP), citing ideological disparities that surfaced after the 2023 elections.
Okupe attributed his resignation to a misalignment between his lifelong adherence to right-wing and liberal democratic principles and the left-of-center ideology of the LP, making his continued membership untenable.
In a letter released to the press on Monday, Okupe stated: “I hereby submit my resignation from the Labour Party with immediate effect. As you may recall, our presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, myself, and others departed from the PDP abruptly and had to find a new platform to contest the 2023 Presidential Elections.”
“The Labour Party, along with your esteemed self and other executives, provided us with this platform without any encumbrances, for which we were immensely grateful.
However, after contesting the election under the banner of the Labour Party and experiencing defeat, I find it increasingly challenging to remain in a party that is ideologically rooted in the left of the center.”
“I have always been aligned with rightist and Liberal Democratic ideals throughout my life.
It is this ideological clash that compels me to seek an exit so that I can continue my political endeavors with liberalism, sincerity, and freedom.”
“I extend my gratitude to you and other party leaders for the respect and cooperation extended to me during my tenure as the Director General of the Obi-Datti Presidential Campaign Organization.
I wish you and the party success in your future endeavors. Long live the Labour Party. Long live the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”
Signed,
Omooba (Dr. Doyin Okupe)
Former Director General
Obi-Datti Campaign Organization
