The Ebonyi State Police Command has paraded two suspects, Dennis Ali and Ituma Sunday, accused of dehumanizing two teenage girls in a disturbing viral video showing the victims being stripped, flogged, and mistreated.
Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Joshua Ukandu, confirmed the arrests in a statement on Monday, revealing that the incident took place in November 2023 in the Ojiegbe Ngbo community, Ohaukwu Local Government Area.
The video, which resurfaced online over the weekend, reportedly went viral and was promptly forwarded to the State Police Commissioner, leading to the suspects’ arrest on Monday.
The teenage victims, aged between 15 and 16, were subjected to inhuman treatment, which DSP Ukandu stated is unlawful and deeply concerning. “Criminal cases have legal punishments as stipulated in the criminal code.
If anyone is caught in such situations, they should be handed over to the police; this treatment is excessive for these young, underage girls,” he said.
Ukandu added that upon her assumption of office, Commissioner of Police Anthonia Uche-Anya emphasized the need to eradicate trial by ordeal, jungle justice, and self-help practices in criminal justice across Ebonyi State.
She reiterated the command’s commitment to eliminating such acts with the support of community stakeholders.
The police assured that all individuals involved in the abuse will face the full extent of the law for their actions.
