Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has taken decisive steps in addressing regional security and political challenges during the 64th ordinary session of the Authority of Heads of State and Government in Abuja on Sunday.
Leaders of ECOWAS have initiated a mechanism to review the activation of a standby force for counterterrorism operations, particularly in regions affected by terrorist groups.
The commitment to eradicating terrorism and ensuring peace, security, and stability in the region was reiterated in a communiqué read by Dr. Omar Touray, President of ECOWAS Commission.

Additionally, ECOWAS leaders resolved to convene an extraordinary summit focused on unconstitutional changes of government, aiming to promote peace, security, and democracy.
The Commission has been directed to conduct thorough reflection and explore the possibility of organizing this summit.
Chaired by President Bola Tinubu, the Authority of ECOWAS Heads of State and Government established a committee to engage with the military junta in Niger Republic.
This engagement seeks a short transition roadmap and the implementation of monitoring mechanisms.
There are plans for a gradual easing of sanctions on Niger Republic based on the outcomes of these engagements, with a strong emphasis on the immediate and unconditional release of detained President Mohammed Bazoum.
ECOWAS expressed condemnation for the continuous detention of President Mohammed Bazoum, his family, and associates by the military junta.
The Authority urged the release of Bazoum and stressed the lack of commitment from the junta to restore constitutional order.
A committee of Heads of State has been formed to engage with the junta and stakeholders, aiming for a swift restoration of constitutional order through a short transition roadmap and the establishment of transition organs.
The ECOWAS leaders’ resolutions reflect a comprehensive approach to regional security concerns and political crises, emphasizing collaboration, engagement, and the pursuit of democratic principles.
