Edo State Deputy Governor, Philip Shaibu, has taken a bold step by declaring his intention to run for the governorship position, challenging his boss, Governor Godwin Obaseki.
Shaibu, who has been in a tense relationship with Obaseki, revealed his ambition to lead the state under the banner of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Speaking in Benin City, Shaibu justified his gubernatorial bid, asserting that Edo requires a practical leader.
Noting the nearing 2024 Edo governorship election, he expressed concerns about experimenting with leadership, emphasizing the need for a leader who understands the state’s politics and the people’s needs.
Shaibu raised questions about Obaseki’s leadership, describing it as experimental.
He addressed reporters, stating, “Edo people need practical governance, and you cannot experiment again with somebody who does not understand the politics of a good state and the needs of the people.”
Highlighting the importance of competence and experience, Shaibu emphasized the need for a governor who can hit the ground running from day one.
He questioned the wisdom of experimenting with a new leader who might spend the initial years learning on the job, urging voters to consider competence and experience in the upcoming election.
“Who is competent? Who is more experienced? Who will hit the ground running from day one?” Shaibu posed these questions, signaling a direct challenge to the status quo and setting the stage for a potentially intense political landscape in Edo State leading up to the 2024 election.
