The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to tackling pension fraud across Nigeria, with a renewed focus on addressing issues in Akwa Ibom State.
This pledge was made by Assistant Commander of the EFCC, Oshodi Johnson, during a recent courtesy visit by the Nigeria Union of Pensioners, Akwa Ibom State Chapter, to the Uyo Zonal Command.
Speaking at the meeting, Johnson assured the pensioners that the EFCC would leave no stone unturned in rooting out corruption in the pension sector. He emphasised that senior citizens who have dedicated their lives to serving the nation deserve to be treated with the utmost respect and dignity. Johnson vowed to utilise all available legal mechanisms to identify and prosecute those involved in pension-related fraud.
“We stand with you and are fully prepared to take swift action against any reports of pension scams or fraud,” Johnson declared. “Our commitment to protecting pensioners is unwavering, and we are ready to assist you in every possible way.”
The visit also served as an opportunity for the Union to formally welcome Johnson to his new role in Uyo. Obong Cosmos M. Essien, the State Secretary of the Union, praised the EFCC’s ongoing efforts to combat pension fraud and other financial crimes. He expressed the Union’s eagerness to maintain a strong partnership with the EFCC, highlighting the importance of the Commission’s work in preserving the nation’s stability.
“We were eager to welcome you, recognising the critical role the EFCC plays in safeguarding our nation’s financial integrity,” Essien said. “As senior citizens, we deeply appreciate your dedication to this cause. Without the EFCC, the situation in our country could be far worse. We encourage you to continue this vital work, and we will keep you in our prayers for success and progress.”
Chairman of the Union, Obong Ekpeyong Daniel Ekpo, also urged the staff of the Uyo Command to persist in their fight against economic and financial crimes, reminding them that their hard work would ultimately be rewarded.
The EFCC’s renewed commitment to tackling pension fraud in Akwa Ibom State highlights its broader mission to ensure justice and protect the rights of Nigeria’s senior citizens. As the Commission continues to work closely with organisations like the Nigeria Union of Pensioners, it remains focused on creating a safer and more equitable environment for all.
