The Secretary of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Mr. Muhammad Hammajoda, has described the involvement of Nigerian students in the fight against corruption and financial crimes as positive, stressing that their engagement is one of the critical pillars in the nation’s anti-corruption efforts.
He made the observation recently in Abuja when the members of the Zero Tolerance Club of the Ahmadu Bello University, ABU Zaria, paid a Courtesy Visit to the Commission’s corporate headquarters.
Highlighting the role Nigerian students play in their various tertiary institutions in the fight against corruption, Hammajoda stated that the Commission is actively engaging them to enhance their moral upbringing, integrity and accountable conduct.
“Your commitment to the fight against economic and financial crimes and promoting integrity and accountability is inspiring. ABU Zaria’s Zero Tolerance Club is one of the most vibrant and active, as such I commend you for the good work and urge you to keep it up”, he said.
He stated further that, “the importance of youth involvement in combating corruption and economic crimes cannot be over emphasised and that’s why the EFCC engages with youths and children through various club engagements, lectures and visits like this. Through this visit, we hope you’ll gain valuable insights into our work and the impact of economic and financial crimes.
He charged the students to join the EFCC in building a society free of corruption, economic and financial crimes and to be able to empower future generations.
“We’re excited to share our experiences, challenges, and successes with you. Let’s work together to build a corruption-free society and empower future generations,” he said.
Speaking on behalf of the students, the President of the Zero Tolerance Club, ZTC, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Joseph Omouha, stated that the visit was EFCC was to foster mutual relationship and to find ways where they can work together with the Commission in the fight against corruption.
“We try to uphold the core values and objectives established by the EFCC for such clubs in the Universities. We carry out our activities, which are focused on sensitization and reorientation; we carry out activities such as awareness campaigns across departments and faculties and sometimes even extend it to secondary schools within Zaria. We also carry out symposiums for students in schools and usually we partner with the Kaduna Zonal Directorate”
“We also engage students’ leaders from time to time and we sensitize them on the need to uphold integrity in the discharge of their duties. Weeks ago, we concluded our membership registration for new members, we partnered with the Kaduna Zonal Directorate, we gave out about thirty-five publications for our new members”, he said.
Omouha also called on the Commission to assist them in their efforts to organise the first ever student- led anti-corruption conference.
