The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has expressed dissatisfaction with the judgment of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court, which awarded N100 million in damages to former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor, Godwin Emefiele.
According to EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale, the commission intends to appeal the judgment immediately.
Justice O.A Adeniyi of the FCT High Court had ruled that the EFCC’s detention of Emefiele during its investigation violated his right to liberty, leading to the fine.

Oyewale stated, “The decision failed to take cognizance of the fact that the former CBN boss was held with a valid order of court.
Consequently, the Commission will approach the Court of Appeal to set it aside.”
Earlier, Justice Adeniyi had awarded N100 million in damages to Emefiele against the Federal Government and EFCC for violations of his rights.
Emefiele had taken legal action against the Federal Government, the Attorney-General of the Federation, and the EFCC to enforce his fundamental rights to life, personal liberty, fair hearing, and freedom of movement.
