The Abuja Muslim Forum has appealed to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, to reconsider the timing of the planned water supply interruption in Abuja, citing potential public health concerns ahead of the Eid-ul-Adha celebrations.
The appeal follows an announcement by FCT authorities on Saturday regarding a scheduled upgrade of the water supply system that would result in water disruption across the capital city for up to two weeks.
In a statement issued by the Ameer of the Forum, Alhaji Abdulrazaq Ajani, the organisation raised alarm over the health implications of the water outage, especially during the festive period when water usage typically spikes.
“We appeal to the Honourable Minister of FCT, Nyesom Wike, to kindly intervene and reconsider the interruptions of water supply during the Eid Kabir celebrations to reduce the discomfort and likely health hazards that may emanate from the foreseeable but avoidable consequences,” the statement read.
The Forum described the timing of the upgrade — coinciding with one of Islam’s most significant festivals — as risky, warning that it could expose residents to disease outbreaks due to the scarcity of water.
While commending the administration’s efforts to modernise the capital city’s infrastructure, the Forum urged authorities to defer the upgrade until after the celebrations.
“Though the upgrade is commendable, we strongly suggest the deferment of the exercise until after the celebrations when the negative impact would have reduced and paled out,” Ajani added.
The Forum expressed gratitude for the developmental strides being undertaken across the FCT and expressed hope that their appeal would be given due consideration in the interest of public welfare.
