Tragedy struck Ometan community in Okpe local government area of Delta State as an oil tanker fire claimed the lives of at least eight individuals. The incident, which occurred on Friday, resulted in a devastating fire that engulfed buildings in the vicinity.
Reports indicate that the tanker lost control while overtaking another truck near the boundary bridge between Uvwie and Okpe Local Government Area.
Eyewitnesses recounted that the front part of the tanker detached from the rear compartment while in motion, leading to a sudden explosion.

Several buildings in the community were razed, and some residents trapped in the inferno lost their lives.
The state governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, visited the scene to assess the situation and extend condolences to the affected community and families of the victims.
Governor Oborevwori, accompanied by the Speaker of the House of Assembly, Emomotimi Guwor, and former chairman of Okpe local government area, expressed deep sadness over the incident.
He assured the community of government’s support during this difficult time.
This incident comes on the heels of a recent gas tanker explosion in Rivers State that claimed many lives and caused extensive damage to properties, underscoring the need for heightened safety measures in the transportation and handling of hazardous materials.
