Principals of secondary schools in Ekiti State have been urged to make the utmost advantage of the Nigeria Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members posted to their schools by making them teach subjects relevant to their various fields of studies.
Ekiti State Deputy Governor, Dr. Kolapo Olusola made the call at Ayetoro/Iloro High School, Iloro-Ekiti during his inspection visit to schools in the area and discovered that corps members were been grossly underutilized.
Dr. Olusola told the principals not to underrate the ability and competence of the corps members to teach effectively and make positive impact on the academic performance of the students, even when education was not their major field of study as graduates.
The Deputy Governor who expressed his unhappiness that corps members who were academically vibrant and energetic are being underutilized advised principals to assigned them to teach subjects that are relevant to their various field of studies in the university.
He also urged corps members to consider themselves as part of the school system and ensure that they put in their best in teaching the students, adding that the students will relate with them in the future on the basis of what they do for them now.
Noting that some schools still have a lot of ground to cover in preparing the SS3 students for the WAEC and NECO examinations, the deputy governor said the government will organize a rescue programme in form of tutorial and extra evening classes to cover the examination syllabus.
