The Centre for Human Rights and Social Justice (CHRSJ) has exposed a staff of the Ikeja Electricity Distribution Company (IKEDC), Daniel, who works at its Elebuju unit in the Ketu area of Lagos State, over stealing of electric materials belonging to people of the area, urging the authority of the IKEDC to take drastic disciplinary action against him (Daniel) before he caused a crisis between the people of the area and IKEDC.
The group disclosed that many people of the area, have been the victims of Daniel, stolen the electric cable and other electric materials and resold it back to the IKEDC customers in the area, saying that the Company should set up a Committee to investigate all the allegations levelled against Daniel so as not to tarnish the wobbling image of the IKEDC. It also frowned at the staff of the electricity distribution companies, particularly, IKEDC over what it termed as illegal disconnection, irregular power supply, crazy/estimate billing and extortion of their consumers in Tipper Garage, Elebuju and Demurin area of Ketu in the State.
It referred to victims of IKEDC’s Daniel as; Mummy ERI, Mr ARAGBADA R.A., and Mr Deji who are respectively living at Ogunyemi, Ademola and Adisa Akintoye Streets in Ketu area of Lagos State.
Explaining, according to CHRSJ, it maintained that the new occupants of the buildings in a few months ago, met about N150,000 on their new house bill and they lodged the complaint to Daniel where they agreed to pay the debt on an instalment basis and Daniel was happy as they promised and on knowing to the occupants of the building that Daniel has planned and the plan was that he would tell the new customers that they should pay the debt into his personal account which they refused and this lead to the misunderstanding between Daniel and new occupiers of the said house where Daniel was threatening them of not going to allow them to enjoy the electricity in the house.
Daniel began to manifest his threat to them by cutting off their light at will because the new occupants of the house have started paying the debt to the distribution company (IKEDC) account which was not going down well with Daniel by putting them into darkness for good four months.
It was also learnt that the new occupants managed to pay a sum of fifty thousand (N50,000) out of the debt meet on the bill and Daniel also refused to restore their light.
In the same vein, Mr Busayo and Mr Caleb of 1st Avenue 12 Road D’ Close, Gowon Estate, Egbeda, Lagos, have been the victim of the crazy bill/estimated bill of the IKEDC which thrown the people of the residential building into darkness for months and IKEDC officials refused to restore their light upon made the payment of N20,000 in the month of April 2021.
Speaking on the development on Saturday, the Executive Chairman of the Centre, Comrade Adeniyi Alimi Sulaiman, commended the campaigners for Wherethereislight led by Comrade Sina Odugbemi for taking the bull by the horn, throwing the weight of the human rights group (CHRSJ) behind the campaign, urging the authority of the IKEDC to transfer their officer called Daniel at Elegbuju unit in Ketu area of the State to their headquarters before they started picketing their offices around the place.
Comrade Sulaiman also warned the IKEDC authority to train their staff on how to relate with their customers so as to make the people of the community be their partners in progress by condemning the overzealousness of many staff of the IKEDC, urging them to restore the light back to the house of Messer Busayo and Caleb of Plot 368, 1st Avenue 12 Road D’ Close, Gowon Estate, Egbeda, without further delaying.
