Eminem gave the surprise of a lifetime to his 17-year-old fan, Gage Garmo, who had been given about a week to live after been diagnosed with bone cancer in 2012 as a freshman in high school.
The 42-year-old rapper visited the terminally ill young hip hop lover in his Rochester Hills Michigan home on Sunday January 11 and according to The Detroit Free Press, ‘Gage sat up with a grin on his face’, something his family hadn’t seen their son do in a long time.
After going through multiple treatments and surgeries, doctors informed Garmo he had just days to live.
Reports say his friends then created the hashtag #GetGageGarmoToMeetEminem, and gained traction on social media as well as local news outlets.
Director for the Rainbow Connection, Mary Grace McCarter – who organized the meeting between the boy and his music icon – said, ‘We’re so glad we were able to reach Eminem’s people and they were able to respond, and Eminem was able on such short notice to go and see this boy in his own home,’
Garmo’s parents and little sister called the visit ‘very special and very quiet at the same time,’ Todt said. ‘It was one of the most amazing things I’ve ever seen. The stars aligned, and Gage’s wish came true.’
According to TMZ, Eminem “was adamant he did not want the visit to become a media spectacle.”
Garmo passed away on Monday, January 12, and Royce da 5’9″, signed to Shady Records, tweeted, ‘R.I.P. Gage. Glad we got to see him.’
