A seven-member delegation from the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) paid a courtesy call on the ECOWAS Regional Electricity Regulatory Authority (ERERA) on Thursday, 5th June 2014 at its headquarters in Accra, Ghana.
The delegation, headed by Dr. Abba Ibrahim, NERC’s Commissioner for Government and Consumer Affairs, included Engineer Mary Emiola Awolokun, Commissioner for Engineering Safety and Standards, Dr. Haliru Dikko, Dr. Usman Abba Arabi, Mr. Shittu Shaibu, Mr. Abubakar Shaibu and Ms. Mary Anahve.
Members of the delegation were received by ERERA’s Regulatory Council comprising its Chairman, El Hadj Ibrahima Thiam, as well as Mrs. Ifeyinwa Ikeonu and Mr. Alagi Gaye, responsible for legal and economic affairs, respectively.
While expressing gratitude over the visit, El Hadj Thiam described the NERC as a very important partner whose contributions would be critical in the process of establishing a regional electricity market, especially in the light of the June 2013 ECOWAS directive on the creation of the regional electricity market, requiring a minimum standard of harmonization by Member States.
Both parties discussed the proposed ECOWAS Ministers of Energy meeting and the ERERA Consultative Committee meetings, which will be held on the side-lines of the ministerial meeting in Abuja, at a yet-to-be-determined date.
They pledged to collaborate effectively to ensure the success of the meetings.
The NERC is expected to use the meetings as platforms to share its experiences on the on-going reform process of the energy sector in Nigeria.
