BERLIN, Germany, June 24, 2014/African Press Organization (APO)/ — Today (23 June) Foreign Minister Frank Walter Steinmeier issued the following statement on the fringes of the EU Foreign Affairs Council in Luxemburg today (23 June) with regard to the release of the young Christian woman sentenced to death for apostasy in Sudan:
It was with great relief that I heard of the release of Miriam Yahia Ibrahim. Freedom of religion is a precious asset.
I welcome the decision by the Sudanese judiciary and I am glad that Miriam Yahia Ibrahim is finally able to live in freedom with her family and children once again and hopefully free from any further persecution.
When the Sudanese Foreign Minister Ali Karti visited Berlin recently, Foreign Minister Steinmeier urgently appealed to him to bring about a swift release.
