Apparently disturbed by the growing attacks infringing on sthe ecurity of lives in the country, Sen. Gyang Pwajok has called for a tactical change that would tackle the roots, rather than the symptoms of the violence.
.
“The Federal Government must change tactics since the current efforts have not eliminated the violence. We must explore workable devices that will be more efficient because the situation is still bad,’’ Pwajok said on Sunday.
.
Pwajok, who represents crisis-ridden Plateau North, said in Jos, that the old approach over time had been to chase the attackers who could run to their hide-out, reinforce and return again.
.
“We must be able to arrest some of these suspects and make examples out of them to scare others.
.
“We must also look into the claims by some state governors that the attackers are more mobilised than the soldiers fighting them because it is very important for the Nigerian state to assure the soldiers that the nation is fully behind them.
.
“We must, as well, look into the allegations that the armed men use more sophisticated weapons and quickly respond to that,’’ he suggested.
.
He said that the new tactics must seek to fish out crisis entrepreneurs that had always gained from the violence and also make examples of them to deter others from seeking to destroy the Nigerian society.
.
Pwajok decried a situation where the killing had persisted even when the patterns had been the same.
.
“We must move away from the blame game and adopt hard tactics commensurate with the severity of the problems; it is clearly a tough situation and the attacked sights are always gory, so we must adopt equally tough measures’’, he said.
.
Noting that all must be involved so as to avoid even more intricate problems in future, he called for stringent measures that would restore confidence in affected communities that were gradually losing hope.
.
He said special attention must be paid to ridding the nation of crisis entrepreneurs because they were gradually emerging as a “cabal of criminals and quasi-criminals.
.
“We should not allow this cabal to take over control even while remaining secure and invincible.
.
“It won’t be right to allow this cabal of criminals to wield so much influence through consistent reign of terror.’’
.
The senator said “Nigeria must strive against a situation where the ordinary people run out of meager needs like water, food and shelter just because of the sheer scale of destruction by unknown people.’’
.
He said government must also be interested in new occupants of destroyed communities, and opined that such occupants may give a clue toward apprehending the unknown attackers that destroyed the initial settlements.
.
Pwajok urged the Federal Government to dust up reports of committees earlier set up on the Plateau crisis, and suggested a prompt implementation of some of the recommendations.
.
He added that “government must strive to address the recurrent violence in Plateau; the land is steadily degenerating before our very eyes.
