The federal government has disclosed that steps are being taken to address the constant crises between farmers and Fulani herdsmen in the country.

Speaking Sunday, during a lecture marking the golden jubilee of the Jamatu Nasril Islam (JNI) which was held in Kaduna, Vice President Nnamadi Sambo also said that the government would ensure fairness and justice to all Nigerians irrespective of religion and ethnicity.

According to him, the government was making concerted efforts to ensure harmony between farmers and pastoralists, adding that strategies had been adopted to stop the constant crises between the two groups.
He added that the federal government was determined to bring an end of the barbaric acts of insurgency in the country and called for the support of the people in fighting the menace.

The vice-president disclosed that President Goodluck Jonathan had also taken steps to address complaints of Muslims on the imbalance in the composition of delegates at the ongoing National Conference.

“On the complaints of imbalance at the National Conference between Muslims and Christians, I want to confirm that the president has immediately directed positive action on the matter. He (President) accepted my recommendation to appoint a Special Adviser on Islamic Affairs,” Sambo said.

Speaking earlier, the Sultan of Sokoto and President General of JNI, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar III, urged the federal government to take urgent steps in tackling the insecurity ravaging the country.

“Everyday we hear of people being killed in different parts of the country. It is a nightmare that is spreading to parts of the country in the name of cattle rustling. We are worried about the Muslims, Christians and Fulani being killed because life is sacred.

“Why are we fighting each other in the name of ethnicity or religion, we should all go about our religion peacefully. Our non Muslim brothers should join us to look at problems bedevilling the country and find solutions,” the sultan said.
