The Minister of Power, Chinedu Nebo has on Friday November 15, 2013 flagged off a solar powered electricity project in the Durnmi, Mpape and Bwari-Area Council of the Abuja.
According to the Power Minister, the project tagged: “Operation Light-Up Nigeria,” an the initiative of the Power Ministry with assistance from Philip International of Netherlands and the Schneider of Germany is a three kilo-watt capacity solar powered electricity project that would provide electricity to the already enumerated 1005 households in Durunmi suburb and other ancillary outlets.
Chinedu Nebo disclosed that “Operation Light-up Rural Communities in Nigeria,” is the initiative of the Nigerian President, saying he wants light for all Nigerians.
He further indicated that the President has promised Nigerians that even in the remotest parts of the country, so long as there are people, there would be electricity. “The Durunmi project is just the first of many more across the length and breadth of Nigeria. The project is God’s blessing to the Durunmi community,” he observed.
The Minister challenged the people of the community to make judicious use of the project, just as he informed them that the existing facility can provide over thirty GSM charging points and refrigeration outlets for the preservation of vaccines and other medical supplies in addition to providing light for the village square.
Nebo asked the community to strive towards giving protection and maintenance to the equipment. Adding, the electricity source – ‘solar’ is God’s gift from the sun. He assured them of constant access to electricity as long as they maintain the facility well; saying some members of the community would be trained on how to maintain the equipment.
Responding to the Minister’s address, the Traditional Head of Durunmi, Ibrahim Jarumi said the community is eternally grateful to Government for the project which has brought community which he described as sleepy and agrarian to limelight among other communities in the Federal Capital Territory.
