Over N427 million in checks were delivered by First Lady Oluremi Tinubu to the surviving spouses and children of service members who had died in the line of duty.
During Tuesday’s presentation event in Abuja, Tinubu mentioned the initiative was a part of RHI’s Social Investment Programme.
The first lady, who is also the national head of RHI, stated that the presentation’s purpose was to give strength to the wives and children of the slain heroes in recognition of their sacrifices.
She claims that 1,709 widows and orphans will be given N250,000 to help them get back on their feet.
In order to provide for her family, she remarked, “This will allow you to capitalize on an existing business or start a business of your choice.”
“We understand widows are not victims; they are survivors; you have showed remarkable fortitude in the face of hardship and we are here to lend a helping hand as you charged a new route.
“We hope that the older widows would provide emotional support to the younger widows, as some of you have been widowed for some time and others have just been widowed.
The entire amount of the draft checks is N427,250,000, which would be donated to the Defence and Police Officers Wives Association (DEPOWA) today.
She remarked that the life of a military spouse was fraught with peril and difficulty due to the constant presence of uncertainty and the need to make sacrifices.
Tinubu praised the wives who had supported their spouses no matter what, and who had endured the unimaginable anguish of losing family members in the line of duty.
“I salute your strength, resilience, and the sacrifices that you, too, have made for our dear country,” she remarked.
