The “Les Elephantes” of Cote d’Ivoire achieved a historic feat beating power-house Nigeria’s Super Falcons 2-1 on Thursday in Brazzaville to claim bronze at the 11th African Games Brazzaville 2015.
It was the first time ‘Les Elephantes’ were competing at the multisport event and they bowed out high with a place on the podium at the expense of reigning African champions, the Super Falcons.
The victory was enough for the Ivorians to seal their authority over the high flying Nigerians, after beating them by a similar margin at the group phase.
Again it was the Falcons who went up early in the second half before the Ivorians came back to decide the tie with two goals in seven minutes.
Veronica Chinwendu gave the Nigerians the lead on 53 minutes but it did not last long before Christelle N’Guessan equalized on 70 minutes. Seven minutes later, Fatou Coulibaly settled matters with the winning goal.
The fourth place remains the worst outing by the Falcons in the history of the quadrennial games since its inception in 2003. Nigeria emerged champions at both the 2003 and 2007 editions in Abuja (Nigeria) and Algiers (Algeria) before failing to qualify for the 2011 edition in Maputo, Mozambique.
