In a recent revelation by Glovo, Nigeria has solidified its position as the front-runner in local food consumption trends across Africa in 2023. The survey conducted by the on-demand delivery service highlights a remarkable surge of 25 times in local food orders throughout the year, firmly establishing Nigeria at the forefront of this burgeoning consumption trend.
The General Manager of Glovo Nigeria, Mrs. Lamide Akinola, unveiled these findings in the company’s annual report, which was released on a Friday in Lagos, as reported by Infostride News. The report not only positions Nigeria as the leader in the African market but also ranks the nation fourth globally in the consumption of authentic local cuisine.
Akinola shed light on the most sought-after food items, citing Jollof rice, fried rice, asun rice, chicken, meat pie, and stir-fried spaghetti as the top choices among consumers. Despite the diverse range of available cuisines, Akinola emphasized the prevalent preference among Nigerians for local dishes, with Jollof rice emerging as a particular favorite.
The Glovo Nigeria General Manager commented on this trend, stating, “Despite the availability of other cuisines, this shows Nigerians’ love for local cuisines, and fueling this affection for local cuisines is Jollof rice.” She further highlighted the unprecedented surge in love for Jollof rice in 2023, evident in an increase in delivered orders compared to the previous year. Additionally, Akinola noted that chicken has emerged as another star performer in the local food scene.
She provided insights into the ordering patterns, revealing that there was consistent growth in orders throughout the weeks of 2023, with Fridays standing out as the peak day, capturing the majority of the total weekly orders.
Beyond the culinary landscape, Glovo’s impact on the economic front is noteworthy. The top-earning courier personnel associated with the platform earned approximately N3.2 million, underscoring the employment opportunities facilitated by Glovo in the multi-category industry. As the year 2023 drew to a close, the total number of partners available on the Glovo app witnessed a substantial increase of 192%.
Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) experienced a remarkable growth of 216% in 2023, emphasizing Glovo’s commitment to onboarding local stores and fostering their business expansion. Akinola reiterated the company’s dedication to supporting local stores and facilitating their growth, signaling a positive trajectory for both the culinary and business landscape in Nigeria.
In conclusion, Glovo’s report not only celebrates Nigeria’s dominance in local food consumption trends but also sheds light on the broader economic impact the platform has had in terms of employment opportunities and SME growth. As the nation continues to savor its love for local cuisines, Glovo stands as a catalyst for economic development, aligning its goals with the support and expansion of local businesses.
