Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State has underscored the crucial role of youth empowerment in driving Nigeria’s socio-economic development.
He reiterated his commitment to creating an environment where young people can realise their full potential, thus contributing significantly to the progress of the state.
Speaking on Friday at the swearing-in ceremony of the Batch B, Stream II, of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) at the Gateway International Stadium in Sagamu, Abiodun emphasised that empowering the youth is not just a policy but a strategic investment in the future of Ogun State and Nigeria at large.

Represented by the Commissioner for Sports Development, Wasiu Isiaka, the governor highlighted the need to provide the youth with opportunities and resources that would allow them to become catalysts for positive change in society.
Governor Abiodun praised the NYSC for its role in nation-building and youth development, noting that the programmes designed by the scheme equip corps members with the necessary skills and knowledge to tackle the challenges they may encounter during their service year and beyond.
He pointed out that the NYSC scheme not only fosters national unity and integration but also serves as a platform for personal growth and the acquisition of life skills.
“The NYSC’s initiatives are tailored to instill a deep understanding of the scheme’s objectives among corps members,” Abiodun stated.
“They are designed to prepare them for the realities of the service year, instilling skills that will aid in overcoming the challenges they might face. Our administration will continue to support such initiatives, as they are critical to the state’s development agenda.”
Governor Abiodun called on corporate entities, non-governmental organisations, and other stakeholders to collaborate with the government in creating an enabling environment for the youth.
He stressed that the task of nurturing young people into responsible leaders is a shared responsibility that cannot rest solely on the shoulders of the government.
“We need a collective effort to mould our youths into responsible leaders of tomorrow,” Abiodun said.
“I urge all stakeholders, including corporate organisations and NGOs, to join hands in providing the resources and support necessary to help our youths thrive.”
Addressing the newly inducted corps members, Governor Abiodun encouraged them to uphold the highest standards of integrity, patriotism, and dedication during their service year.
He urged them to seize the opportunity to reinvent themselves, abandoning any past behaviours that might hinder their potential to contribute to the nation’s progress.
“As you begin your one-year national service, I enjoin you to demonstrate responsibility, integrity, patriotism, loyalty, dedication, discipline, and commitment to our great nation,” he said.
“This is a time for personal growth and transformation. Embrace the values of the NYSC and make the most of the opportunities presented to you.”
The NYSC State Coordinator, Mrs Olayinka Nasamu, also addressed the corps members, highlighting the importance of the structured and regimented orientation exercise in fostering discipline and self-reliance.
She urged the participants to take full advantage of the Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) programme, which is designed to equip them with valuable skills that can be utilised in the labour market or for self-employment.
“The orientation exercise is not just a formality but a vital component of your development as future leaders,” Mrs Nasamu said.
“The SAED programme, in particular, offers you a unique opportunity to acquire skills that will empower you to be self-reliant.
Take every aspect of the course seriously, as it is designed to prepare you for the challenges ahead.”
She further encouraged the corps members to engage with their host communities positively, emphasising that Ogun State is known for its hospitality and welcoming nature.
Mrs Nasamu expressed her gratitude to Governor Abiodun’s administration for its continued support of the NYSC, ensuring a smooth and successful programme in the state.
A total of 1,983 graduates, comprising 884 males and 1,099 females, were registered for the NYSC programme in Ogun State.
The governor’s commitment to youth empowerment and the collaborative efforts of the NYSC underscore the importance of equipping the younger generation with the tools and opportunities necessary to drive sustainable development in Ogun State and beyond.
As these young Nigerians embark on their service year, they carry the hopes of a brighter, more prosperous future, fuelled by integrity, discipline, and a dedication to the nation’s growth.
