Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, has dismissed calls for him to join former Vice President Atiku Abubakar as his running mate in the 2027 presidential election.
The call was made by a group known as Diri Angels (DA), which urged Atiku to consider Governor Diri as his Vice-Presidential candidate.
DA’s statement, signed by Secretary John Ondowari on Tuesday, expressed confidence that Atiku would again be the Presidential Candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in 2027 and suggested that Diri’s selection as running mate would bolster his chances against President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

However, Governor Diri, through his Chief Press Secretary, Daniel Alabrah, dismissed the group as faceless and non-existent, accusing them of attempting to create disaffection.
Diri described the proposal as a “Greek gift” from political opportunists and urged it to be disregarded.
Governor Diri emphasized his reliance on divine guidance in his political journey and reaffirmed his commitment to serving the people of Bayelsa State, who elected him in 2019 and re-affirmed his mandate on November 11, 2023.
“I am not swayed by such calls. In my political journey, I have always relied on God and not on political jobbers with devious intentions,” Diri stated.
“The aim of those behind this act is to cause disaffection but the plot is dead on arrival as I’m not interested in such a Greek gift.”
He assured the people of Bayelsa State that he remains focused on delivering the dividends of democracy and will not be distracted by those with ill intentions.
