The Governor of Abia State, Dr Okezie Ikpeazu, has ordered the release of 20 prisoners convicted in various courts in the state for allied offences ranging from stealing, armed robbery, conspiracy, intent to commit felony, advanced fee fraud, indecent assault, threatening violence among other offences. He made this move to commemorate the Christmas and New Year celebrations.
These prisoners are being held in Aba, Umuahia, Port Harcourt and Enugu federal prisons.
The release of these prisoners by the Governor is on the advice and recommendation of the Abia State Advisory Council on prerogative of Mercy headed by the state Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Chief Umeh Kalu.
In a press statement the Attorney General and commissioner for justice urged the released prisoners to be law abiding and join hands with fellow Abians in the drive to provide a better future for our state and country at large. [24/12/15/ABSG]
