Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, his Deputy, Godwins Omobayo, and the Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, Blessing Agbebaku, all suffered defeats in their respective local government areas during Saturday’s governorship election.
The election, conducted by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on September 21, 2024, saw the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC) making significant inroads, defeating key figures from the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Governor Obaseki, who hails from Oredo Local Government Area, lost to the APC, with the opposition party securing 30,780 votes, while the PDP trailed behind with 24,938 votes.

Similarly, Dennis Idahosa, the APC’s Deputy Governorship candidate and current lawmaker representing the Ovia Federal Constituency, lost his local government area to the PDP.
The constituency, which includes Ovia North East and Ovia South West local governments, saw the PDP winning in both.
In Ovia North East LGA, the PDP garnered 15,311 votes, while the APC polled 13,225 votes.
In Ovia South West, the PDP narrowly edged out the APC with 10,260 votes compared to 10,150 votes for the opposition.
Meanwhile, the embattled Deputy Governor, Godwins Omobayo, lost his local government, Akoko-Edo, to the APC in a landslide.
The PDP managed to secure 15,865 votes, while the APC dominated with 34,847 votes.
The Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, Blessing Agbebaku, also faced defeat in his local government, as the APC triumphed with 12,277 votes over the PDP’s 11,284 votes.
So far, results from 17 local government areas have been declared, with the APC emerging victorious in 11, while the PDP secured wins in six local governments.
The outcome of the election underscores the growing influence of the APC in Edo State, setting the stage for further political shifts as results continue to unfold.
