The Guatemalan Ambassador to Nigeria, His Excellency, Acislo Vallandares Molina has presented his letter of credence. He was received on behalf of His Excellency, the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, by the Minster of Foreign Affairs, Amb. Aminu WalI, on 17th, April 2014 in Abuja.
Amb. Molina conveyed Guatemala’s condolence and solidarity with Nigeria over the recent bombing of Nyanya Bus Station, adding that he was confident that Nigeria would overcome her security challenges.
He also expressed his country’s gratitude to Nigeria for supporting the candidature and appointment of Guatemala’s Jose Orive as the Executive Director of the International Sugar Organization.
The Ambassador also disclosed that plans were in the offing for his country to open an embassy in Lagos to further strengthen the over three decades of bilateral relations between both countries.
According to him, “We have many things in common with Nigeria, we are emerging economies, we are emerging democracies and we have many centuries of cultural history and affinity.”
While responding, the Minister said that Nigeria has been a major pillar in bringing together, encouraging and promoting South-South co-operation. He then pledged Nigeria’s continued support and cooperation with emerging economies round the world. He also recalled that during his tenure as Nigeria’s permanent representative at the United Nations, both countries collaborated and supported each other on various issues.
Amb. Wali commended Guatemala’s efforts at promoting democracy and urged Amb. Malino to ensure that the existing bilateral relations with Nigeria is strengthened.
Amb Molina has concurrent accreditation to Nigeria, Kenya, Ethopia, African Union and South Africa.
