Guinea coach, Paul Put has blasted his team’s defensive display vs Madagascar in their first Group B Africa Cup of Nations clash yesterday evening.
Sory Kaba scored for Guinea in the 34th minute after a beautiful pass from midfielder Amadou Diawara. But after the first half, Anicet Abel took advantage of Guinea’s terrible defending to score a superb header from a perfect corner kick from Carolus Andria which gave Madagascar their equalizer and first-ever goal at Afcon.
Minutes after the equalizer, Carolus Andria, who got the assist for the first goal found space in Guinea’s box to net his country’s second goal.
The goal convinced Paul Put to bring in Liverpool midfielder, Naby Keita in the 62nd minute and it paid off as he instantly started creating several opportunities for his teammates.
Guinea finally got their equalizer in the 66th minute and the game ended 2-2, but Paul Put is not happy with the defensive blunders.
His words, “First half we strike, it was 1-0. And then they equalize through a corner kick. These are mistakes that cannot happen at this level,” Put told the media after the match.
“Then we were out of control of the game and then we take a second goal for nothing. And we had to do everything to get back […] and then we can dominate the game, but unfortunately, we conceded those stupid goals.
“I hope it’s a lesson for the players and now we have to know what to do against Nigeria.”
“I think we have quality in the team. I think we dominated a big part of the game [against Madagascar]. But we may not make those faults behind in our organization against Nigeria,”
No excuses if you make mistakes against Nigeria, it will be difficult.”
