Madaka village in Niger State was recently besieged by gunmen in a tragic attack that claimed the lives of 30 people and left about 50 houses razed to the ground.
The assault, which occurred on Thursday, also resulted in the deaths of key figures in the community, including the Village Head, Saleh Ahmad Kakuri, and the Commander of the vigilante, along with his Deputy, in the Madaka District of Rafi local government area.
The bandits extended their rampage to Majanjan District in the same local government, where Alhaji Salihu Immahuri, the Maianguwan (Village Head) of Anguwan Bala, and his two wives were brutally killed.
A local traditional ruler confirmed the tragic events, highlighting the prolonged attack during which the bandits operated with impunity, met with no resistance from security forces.
He lamented, “The bandits invaded the village around 3:30 pm on Thursday. Over 30 bodies have already been recovered by the villagers.
They operated for several hours without response from security agencies.”
The attacks, which occurred during a bustling market day, led to a high number of casualties. Additionally, over 50 houses, including commercial shops, were set ablaze during the onslaught.
A village source recounted, “The suspected armed men stormed the village shooting sporadically, killed several people and burnt down the market.
They also abducted an unspecified number of the villagers to an unknown destination.
For now, we cannot say the exact number of people killed or abducted.”
This tragic incident bears a resemblance to a previous attack on the same village, indicating a recurring threat to the community’s security.
As of now, the Niger State government has not issued an official statement regarding the attack, leaving residents anxious for concrete action to address the escalating insecurity in the region.
