Retired Major Hamza Al-Mustapha, former Chief Security Officer to the late Head of State, General Sani Abacha, has declared his intention to contest Nigeria’s 2027 presidential election, stating that his ambition this time is “serious.”
Al-Mustapha made the declaration during an interview with the BBC Hausa Service, where he addressed key issues including Nigeria’s democratic process, insecurity, and poverty, as well as his role in the military regime of the 1990s.
“God willing, I only tested it, but this time I’m serious about running,” he said, referring to his previous unsuccessful bids for the presidency in 2019 and 2023.

The retired military officer revealed that consultations have already begun with international stakeholders to ensure credible and transparent elections. He alleged that Nigeria’s past elections were marred by manipulation.
“That is why we have discussed with foreign countries, asking them to closely monitor Nigeria, especially regarding the elections, because election results are usually written,” he said.
Al-Mustapha ruled out joining any political alliance that does not align with his ideology, stressing that he would not compromise his values for political gain.
“If their ideology is different from ours, then I don’t want to be part of something shameful that would bring dishonor to the country with my involvement,” he stated.
When asked if he would consider supporting other presidential hopefuls such as former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Al-Mustapha was dismissive.
“There is no possibility of our paths crossing politically, so there’s no need for that question,” he said.
Al-Mustapha, who remains a controversial figure in Nigerian political discourse, said his campaign would focus on restoring integrity to Nigeria’s democratic and electoral processes.
