According to Dawn, the Pakistan Senate on Wednesday approved a resolution requesting that the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) take action to organize national general elections within the time frame allotted by Article 224 of the Constitution.
Dawn is a newspaper published in Pakistan in English.
In his resolution, JI Senator Mushtaq Ahmad also asked all state institutions to do everything within their power to support the ECP in conducting the elections.
According to recent statements made by ministers, constitutional requirements may cause the next general elections to be delayed.
Initial statements made this week by Pakistan’s Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah and Defense Minister Khawaja Asif indicated that elections were “due in November” and that 2023 was not an election year.
According to Dawn, the Senate’s resolution on Wednesday emphasized that the Supreme Court had decided that elections under Article 224 of the Constitution, to be held once the National Assembly’s term ended or it was dissolved, was a “divine” duty that could not be ignored.
It declared that a person or organization only possessed the authority granted to them by statute or the Constitution, and that the caretaker government’s functions were limited to organizing elections and making day-to-day decisions.
The resolution read as follows: “Therefore, this House demands the ECP to ensure holding polls within the stipulated period of time given under Article 224 of the Constitution and take all necessary measures in this regard.”
It said, “The House also demands that state institutions give the ECP all assistance possible so that it can conduct elections on time, fulfilling its constitutional responsibility.”
