Ahead of the February general elections, the Inspector General of Police, IGP Suleiman Abba, has warned officers and men of the Nigeria Police to beware of partisanship or face the wrath of the law.
The IG gave the warning yesterday during the official launch of a 28-page pocket handbook, titled, “Nigeria Police Force Standard Operational Guideline of Rules for Police Officers on Electoral Duty”.
Mr. Abba said that the book would guide the officers on their non-partisanship, accessibility and humility in providing security for the exercise.
“One of the strategies we have adopted to live up to expectations in the provision of security for the 2015 elections is to educate our personnel. I hope other stakeholders will also sensitise their members so that the current apprehension can be reduced.
“It is simply a guide to all police officers on their legal responsibilities and ethical expectations from members of the public. It is aimed at improving the individual and ultimately the general performance of the Nigeria police force in ensuring free, fair and credible elections.
“It is for police officers right from the rank of Inspector-General of Police to the Constable”, Abba said.
The police chief, who warned that officers found wanting would be disciplined, said the book would be extended to sister security agencies that would partner with the police in providing security during the elections.
