The Inspector-General of Police, (IGP), Suleiman Abba, has directed Commissioners of Police in the country to ensure proper monitoring of local vigilante groups in their jurisdiction.
He explained that the move was aimed at ensuring that the activities of such groups were in tune with laid down rules and regulation in order to avoid abuses.
This directive was contained in a statement signed by the Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Emmanuel Ojukwu, on Thursday.
For effective result, the IGP also instructed that a police officer be appointed in all commands to oversee the activities of these groups and render regular reports of their activities.
The directive comes on the heels of the killing of over 70 Boko Haram fighters by some local hunters and vigilante in Maiha Local Government area of Adamawa State.
The insurgents had seized Maiha town after a fierce battle with Nigerian troops on Monday, however, the victory was short-lived as the local hunters ambushed the insurgents and killed them in their numbers, regaining control of the town.
