The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has extended the ongoing nationwide Continuous Voter Registration, CVR, exercise by two weeks and introduced a new online self-service registration platform for first-time voters.
The commission announced the development in a statement issued on Friday.
According to INEC, the CVR exercise, which commenced on August 18, 2025, and was initially scheduled to end on Friday, July 10, 2026, will now close on Friday, July 24, 2026.

The commission said the extension followed a review of the exercise and feedback received from its state offices, political parties, civil society organisations and other stakeholders.
INEC explained that the additional two weeks would provide more eligible Nigerians who are yet to register the opportunity to be included in the national register of voters ahead of future elections.
The commission also announced that from Wednesday, July 8, 2026, it would roll out a fully online self-service voter registration platform for eligible first-time voters.
According to the statement, the platform, which will be accessible through the Commission’s dedicated portal, will enable eligible citizens to complete their voter registration, including biometric capture, using their personal devices from any location without visiting an INEC office.
INEC said the new system incorporates identity verification, biometric validation and other backend security checks to safeguard the integrity of the National Register of Voters.
“The extension underscores the Commission’s commitment to ensuring that every eligible Nigerian has a fair and reasonable opportunity to be included in the Register of Voters,” the statement read.
The electoral body urged all eligible but unregistered Nigerians to take advantage of the extended registration period and the new digital registration option.
It added that it remains committed to delivering a credible, inclusive and accessible voter registration process while leveraging technology to improve citizens’ experience in the electoral process.
