The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced the promotion of 5,196 staff members across Nigeria.
This disclosure was made in the commission’s daily bulletin issued by Mrs. Adenike Tadese, the Director of Publicity and Voter Education, in Abuja on Thursday.
According to Tadese, the promotions resulted from the 2023 promotion examination and evaluation conducted by the commission, emphasizing its dedication to the welfare and professional development of its workforce.

Breaking down the figures, Tadese explained that 55 deputy directors on Grade Level 16 were elevated to the rank of Director on Grade Level 17, while 54 assistant directors on Grade Level 15 were promoted to the deputy director cadre on Grade Level 16.
Additionally, 338 officers on Grade Level 14 were promoted to Assistant Directors on Grade Level 15, with the bulk of the promotions affecting 4,749 officers between Grade Levels 7 and 13.
In a related development, INEC has directed four of its directors to proceed on terminal leave.
This decision, according to Sam Olumekun, the National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee (IVEC), follows a directive from the Federal Government via a circular issued on July 27, 2023.
The circular mandates directors with eight years or more of service to retire from the public sector.
Olumekun specified that two of the directors proceeding on terminal leave served as heads of departments at the Commission’s Headquarters in Abuja, while the other two were deployed as Administrative Secretaries in state offices.
He clarified that Clinical Officers in the medical cadre are exempt from the Federal Government Retirement Policy, as outlined in Circular MH 7205/T31 dated September 7.
The recent promotions and directives at INEC demonstrate the commission’s commitment to enhancing its operational efficiency and ensuring compliance with government regulations regarding retirement policies.
