Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has expressed concern over the growing insecurity in Nigeria, urging current leaders to take proactive steps to address the menace.
Speaking during a visit to Bauchi on Sunday, where he met with the Emir of Bauchi, Dr. Rilwanu Adamu, Obasanjo emphasized the importance of local cooperation in tackling crime, noting that many criminals operate from within communities.
“During our time in office, we prioritized the security of lives and property across the country. Right now, we need to act urgently,” Obasanjo said.

He advocated for community policing as an effective solution.
“The best form of security is community policing because everyone knows their neighbors. With that, it becomes easy to identify the bad eggs,” he explained.
Obasanjo also called on traditional institutions to promote community policing within their domains. “I urge our traditional leaders to step in and encourage community policing to curb the rising wave of crime,” he added.
Reflecting on his administration, Obasanjo stressed the importance of unity and teamwork in governance. “We made decisions collectively and focused on achieving common goals.
My brother, Ahmed Adamu Mu’azu, who is seated here, can bear me witness that whatever we achieved then was through collective effort,” he said.
He concluded by calling for unity and peace in the nation. “For Nigeria to progress, we need peace, unity, and collective support.
Things can get better again if we unite and work together.”
Earlier, Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed informed the Council of Traditional Rulers that Obasanjo’s visit was to celebrate the achievements of his administration in promoting good governance.
As part of the visit, Obasanjo will commission two road projects completed during his administration, aimed at boosting the state’s development and improving transportation.
