Marco Verratti to Barcelona COULD be one of the biggest transfers of this summer.
The Italy midfielder has told Paris Saint-Germain that he wants to leave the club, putting Italian champions Juventus on red alert. However, Barcelona are the favourites to sign Verratti in a mega-money deal, as they attempt to revamp their midfield ahead of next season.
And it seems the plan to being Verratti to the Nou Camp has been in place for longer than you might think.
While most mid-match conversations between opposition players tend to be a little ‘fruity’, one chat during PSG’s 4-0 thrashing of Barcelona back in February now looks increasingly significant.
During the Champions League last 16 clash – the first leg of the tie which saw Barca secure THAT 6-1 comeback win in the second leg – PSG’s Blaise Matuidi and Barcelona’s Andres Iniesta had what seemed (at the time) to be an odd exchange.
alking to Le10 Sport, Matuidi revealed that he had a bizarrely civilised chat with Iniesta… about Verratti being his potential long-term replacement at Barcelona.
“When Verratti was down on the ground [with an injury], I said to him [Iniesta] that he was his successor.
“He said to me: ‘Yeah, that’s what I think [too]’,”
So, in this little exchange…
Iniesta has confirmed that Verratti is ACTUALLY the new Iniesta (because Iniesta says so).
Made it clear that Verratti has been on Barcelona’s radar for some time.
All but confirmed that Barca will making an offer to PSG at some point.
And, most incredibly, Iniesta and Matuidi have proven that mid-match conversations can be oddly civil and revealing.
