According to the New York Post, former President Donald Trump has stated that there is “no way” he will have a fair trial in the federal case against him for the 2020 election fraud case.
He has also requested that the case be transferred to a new venue and presided over by a different judge.
It’s “NO WAY I CAN GET A FAIR TRIAL, OR EVEN CLOSE TO A FAIR TRIAL IN WASHINGTON, D.C.,” Trump wrote on Truth Social on Sunday.
He called for a government takeover of the “filthy and crime-ridden embarrassment” that is Washington, DC, and blamed the current administration, saying that killings in the city have broken “all-time records” and that visitors have fled.
Trump also said that the allegations leveled against him might have been made years ago, but instead they were raised in the midst of the election campaign.
Hope you’re keeping an eye on America. THE DESTRUCTION OF OUR NATION CONTINUES. In another, he urged readers to “MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN.”
Judge Tanya Chutkan is presiding over the case involving the former president’s alleged attempts to derail the 2020 election, and the former president has stated that he will be calling for her recusal “on very powerful grounds.”
Trump then tweeted, “WE WILL BE IMMEDIATELY ASKING FOR RECUSAL OF THIS JUDGE ON VERY POWERFUL GROUNDS, AND LIKEWISE FOR VENUE CHANGE, OUT OF D.C.”
According to the New York Post, Judge Chutkan, who is presiding over the case but did not preside over the former president’s arraignment on Thursday, has a reputation as a stern “punisher” of Trump supporters who stormed the US Capitol on January 6, 2021.
Palm Beach, Florida federal Judge Aileen Cannon, a Trump appointee, is presiding over the case against him for allegedly concealing highly classified information at his Mar-a-Lago club.
Judge Chutkan was assigned to hear the third criminal indictment against Trump at random. Former President Obama nominated her for a judgeship.
According to the New York Post, the 61-year-old judge recently denied a request by Trump’s legal team for extra time to reply to a request from the Justice Department for a protective order limiting what he may publicly reveal about the case.
Special Counsel Jack Smith indicted President Trump last week on four counts related to his efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 election.
According to the New York Post, he is being charged with conspiracy to defraud the United States, conspiracy against rights, and obstruction of and attempt to hinder an official action.
Three separate indictments have been filed against the ex-president since March. The Manhattan District Attorney has indicted him on 34 counts.
Stormy Daniels, a former adult film actress, has filed a complaint with the office of Attorney Alvin Bragg alleging that hush money payments were made to her before the 2016 election. According to the New York Post, he has also been indicted on 40 charges in a federal case involving sensitive information in Florida.
Trump has pleaded not guilty to the additional charges brought against him by special counsel Jack Smith in the case claiming improper handling of confidential documents while in office.
It was the second ‘not guilty’ plea filed by the former president in as many days; on Thursday, he was arraigned in a separate inquiry by the special counsel into conspiracies to thwart the upcoming 2020 presidential election.
Meanwhile, the New York Post reports that Trump’s next hearing in the 2020 election case will be on August 28; this will be five days after the first GOP debate of the 2024 presidential campaign.
